“Wozniacki Defends Raducanu’s US Open Win”

Caroline Wozniacki defended Emma Raducanu against John Isner’s remarks questioning the significance of her remarkable US Open victory compared to other recent tennis upsets. Raducanu, the British sensation, made history in 2021 by becoming the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows, winning the championship at just 18 years old without dropping a set in 10 consecutive matches against Leylah Fernandez in a thrilling final.

In a similar vein of unexpected triumphs, Valentin Vacherot’s victory at the Shanghai Masters as the lowest-ranked player ever to win a Masters title stunned the tennis world last month. The Monaco-based player defeated notable opponents, including Novak Djokovic, on his way to securing the trophy by defeating his cousin Arthur Rinderknech in the final.

While Isner argued that Vacherot’s achievement overshadowed Raducanu’s Grand Slam success due to its improbability, Wozniacki, a former Australian Open champion, strongly asserted on a podcast that winning a Grand Slam title holds greater significance than other accomplishments in tennis. She emphasized that claiming a Grand Slam title is superior to winning a lower-tier tournament like the Shanghai Masters.

Wozniacki, who retired in 2022 but returned to professional tennis in 2023, shared her perspective amidst rumors about her potential retirement following the birth of her third child in July. Raducanu, on the other hand, has faced challenges in maintaining her US Open-winning form, acknowledging the ongoing comparisons and pressures associated with her historic victory.

Reflecting on the aftermath of her US Open triumph, Raducanu revealed her struggles with the lingering comparisons and expectations, mentioning her brief experience with therapy to cope with the unique challenges she faced. Despite trying therapy briefly, she concluded that self-reliance and self-understanding were the key factors in navigating her journey as a young athlete.
