A husband and wife have revealed their intention to breed and consume guinea pigs following the approval of their eco-friendly home construction project in rural Wales. Dave and Mayu Phillips received the green light from Pembrokeshire County Council for their development, which involves raising small livestock for meat production.
Situated in a sought-after area of south Pembrokeshire near popular tourist destinations like Tenby and Saundersfoot, the property will also be used to raise pigeons and rabbits for sustenance, aiming to lead a sustainable lifestyle on the property.
During a planning committee session, Mr. Phillips emphasized his family’s long-standing roots in Pembrokeshire and described the endeavor as his way of positively contributing to the region’s future. The project includes the construction of a low-impact residence, increased cultivation of honey and walnuts on-site, and the maintenance of small livestock.
Councillor Mark Carter raised questions about the choice of meat with Mr. Phillips, specifically mentioning the guinea pigs and rabbits. Mr. Phillips clarified that the guinea pigs they breed are distinct from common pets and are bred for meat consumption similar to rabbits, citing their experience in breeding them over the years.
The initiative falls under the One Planet Development framework, a Welsh planning policy aimed at encouraging sustainable living and working practices on personal land, allowing construction on rural sites that might otherwise be restricted from development.
Expressing their enthusiasm for the One Planet movement, Mr. Phillips and his wife highlighted the importance of living sustainably and the need to address the ecological challenges faced by humanity. The One Planet Council advocates for such projects, emphasizing the benefits of sustainable living and the positive impact on social, economic, and environmental aspects.
By adopting the One Planet Development approach, households can reduce their ecological footprints, contributing to the overall reduction of resource consumption on Earth. The Welsh government introduced this policy in 2011 as part of the One Wales: One Planet initiative, promoting a holistic and sustainable way of life.
