Virgin Media O2 users are being cautioned to be vigilant as a new fraudulent email is circulating in the UK. The email is targeting individuals affected by the recent closure of O2’s 3G mobile platform, which became obsolete earlier this year, necessitating a shift to faster 4G and 5G services.
While most O2 customers may not be impacted by the transition, cybercriminals are taking advantage of the situation. Scammers are sending deceptive emails posing as Virgin Media O2, claiming that a SIM card upgrade is necessary due to the 3G switch-off.
Customers are advised by Virgin Media O2 to be cautious as the fraudulent emails appear authentic with official branding. The subject line of the email states, “Alert: Switch to Your New 5G SIM for a Faster, Stronger Network.”
It is emphasized that these emails are not legitimate and should be disregarded. Recipients are urged not to click on any links, respond, but instead delete the emails promptly. Any individual receiving such emails can report them by forwarding to phishing@virginmediao2.co.uk.
This fraudulent activity is a form of phishing where scammers pretend to be reputable organizations to deceive individuals into disclosing sensitive personal information. In some cases, scammers may even send a SIM card via courier and request the recipient to activate it using a provided four-digit PIN.
The email may also prompt users to log in to the O2 app with a given password and contain a “Contact Us” button, potentially linking victims directly to the scammers. If successful, scammers could access a customer’s private account or gather enough personal data to compromise O2 or other online accounts, leading to identity theft and financial repercussions.
In case of doubt regarding the authenticity of an email from a service provider, it is advisable to ignore it and verify directly using official contact information. Seeking a second opinion from a trusted source before taking any action is also recommended.
