The UK’s Labour Party leader, Keir Starmer, has expressed readiness to strengthen ties with the EU single market if it benefits the nation. He emphasized the importance of aligning more closely with the EU and mentioned potential adjustments to border check regulations for goods and services. However, Starmer clarified that there would be no reconsideration of freedom of movement, which ceased post-Brexit.
Starmer criticized the misinformation spread by figures like Nigel Farage during the Brexit referendum, stating his focus on moving forward rather than dwelling on past debates. Following the UK’s departure from the EU customs union and single market, he highlighted the advantages of the single market in facilitating trade by eliminating tariffs and promoting the free movement of goods, services, capital, and people among member countries.
In his pursuit of closer European relations, Starmer has already signed a trade agreement. Nevertheless, there are calls within his party, including from Health Secretary Wes Streeting, to pursue a customs union deal with Brussels for further collaboration.
During an interview, the Prime Minister expressed support for closer alignment with the single market, citing potential benefits for the UK’s national interests. He emphasized the importance of considering such alignment, especially in areas like energy and emissions. Regarding the customs union, he acknowledged past discussions but highlighted the advantages of focusing on the single market for future alignment.
When asked about revisiting freedom of movement, the PM mentioned exploring a youth mobility scheme for young people to travel, work, and experience different European countries. He criticized Farage and others for spreading falsehoods during the Brexit referendum and emphasized the Labour Party’s diplomatic approach to international relations over sensationalism.
