The Met Office has pinpointed the UK regions likely to see snowfall from late January to early February. According to their extended forecast, snow, sleet, and colder conditions are expected to return from January 23 to February 1 due to a high-pressure Arctic blast colliding with Atlantic weather patterns.
While the prevailing Atlantic front will bring heavy rain in most areas, certain regions, especially the far northeast of England including Newcastle, Durham, Sunderland, and the Scottish border, could experience snowfall again.
The Met Office stated that a battle between Atlantic weather systems pushing in from the west and high pressure and colder, drier conditions from the east will persist during this period. Initially, milder Atlantic air will dominate, with rain showers expected. However, temperatures may drop in the far northeast, leading to sleet or snow.
Looking ahead, the start of February may bring wintry hazards to the northeast, with unsettled conditions possible through the first half of the month. The weather patterns near the UK are expected to evolve slowly, with a higher likelihood of cold conditions and wintry weather risks. Towards mid-February, conditions could become more unsettled with temperatures returning closer to average.
