Tottenham Hotspur is showing interest in bringing back former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher to the Premier League this month. The club is actively seeking new additions in the January transfer window to support their struggling squad, although uncertainty looms over the future of manager Thomas Frank.
Following Spurs’ FA Cup third-round exit at the hands of Aston Villa, Frank’s position at the club is in jeopardy. Interestingly, Aston Villa is also eyeing a move for Atletico Madrid’s 25-year-old midfielder and has already started negotiations for a permanent transfer.
Reports from Football London indicate that Tottenham, long-time admirers of Gallagher, have intensified their pursuit of the player. Atletico Madrid is reportedly only willing to consider a permanent deal for Gallagher and is not open to a loan with an option to buy in the future.
While Villa has presented a proposal to bring Gallagher back to the Premier League, Spurs have initiated informal talks over the weekend. Several European clubs are also interested in the midfielder but are reluctant to commit to a permanent deal immediately, preferring a loan arrangement with a potential purchase option later on.
Gallagher, who has represented England 22 times, is reportedly eager for a return to the Premier League after struggling to secure a regular spot in Atletico Madrid’s starting lineup under manager Diego Simeone. As the World Cup approaches, Gallagher is keen to showcase his abilities to catch the attention of England manager Thomas Tuchel for a spot in the national team.
Before his move to Atletico, Gallagher impressed during a loan spell at Crystal Palace in the 2021-22 season before becoming a key player at Chelsea. However, with his time in Spain possibly coming to an end, both Spurs and Villa are competing for his signature.
