Nigel Farage’s Reform UK has been cautioned by Keir Starmer for aiming to sow discord in communities, urging his top ministers to remain focused on the cost of living and the pivotal choice confronting voters. In a renewed critique of the right-wing group, the Prime Minister emphasized the decision at hand: a Labour government revitalizing the nation versus a Reform movement thriving on resentment, deterioration, and discord.
Starmer charged his Cabinet with the task of combating the Reform UK’s agenda, highlighting their desire for a diminished state, the promotion of hostility in communities, and appeasement of Putin. He stressed the importance of embracing the challenge ahead as the defining battle of their political careers.
During their initial gathering of 2026, Starmer also encouraged his Cabinet members not to waver amidst speculations about his leadership leading up to crucial elections in England, Scotland, and Wales in May. With national polls indicating a challenging road ahead for Labour, there are concerns about Starmer’s future as Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister assured the Cabinet, in a meeting devoid of civil servants, of the magnitude of the task at hand. He underscored the significance of maintaining faith and resolve within the team, asserting that governments falter not due to fluctuating polls but when they lose conviction or courage. He expressed confidence that their government would not succumb to either.
Starmer emphasized to his Cabinet that addressing the cost of living must take precedence and should not be derailed by international turbulence. During the year’s inaugural Cabinet session, he reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting families grappling with financial challenges and cautioned ministers that their performance will be judged based on the populace’s sense of economic improvement.
Lucy Powell, who was previously removed from the Cabinet by Starmer, attended the political Cabinet session as Deputy Leader. She commended the Prime Minister and his team for welcoming her in her new role and expressed eagerness to advocate for their shared values.
As global events unfold, including ongoing tensions involving the US and Greenland, and Starmer’s upcoming participation in a meeting of Ukraine’s allies in Paris, the focus remains on addressing domestic concerns. Starmer emphasized that despite the world’s uncertainties, tackling the cost of living remains paramount and demands their unwavering attention.
