Ryanair is set to implement a significant change starting on Wednesday, November 12, to enhance the airport experience for passengers. This change involves the adoption of 100% Digital Boarding Passes (DBP), eliminating the option for travelers to download or print physical paper tickets. Instead, passengers will need to access their boarding passes through the Ryanair App.
Initially planned for May 2025, this initiative aims to eradicate check-in charges, save approximately 300 tonnes of paper annually, and offer travelers instant flight updates. Ryanair noted that nearly 80% of its more than 207 million yearly passengers have already made the switch to digital boarding passes.
Dara Brady, Ryanair’s Chief Marketing Officer, emphasized the benefits of this transition, highlighting a faster, smarter, and eco-friendly travel experience for passengers. The move to digital boarding passes will also grant access to various innovative in-app features such as ‘Order to Seat’, real-time flight information, and direct updates during disruptions.
For travelers concerned about the practical implications of this change, detailed instructions on check-in procedures and accessing DBPs are available before the November 12 deadline. A Digital Boarding Pass (DBP) is an electronic ticket obtained after check-in with Ryanair, replacing physical tickets for boarding flights.
Passengers can complete online check-in via Ryanair.com or the Ryanair App on Apple’s App Store and Google Play store. It is recommended to check-in beforehand to avoid additional fees. After check-in, the DBP will automatically appear in the Ryanair App, which must be presented at airport security and the boarding gate.
However, for flights from Morocco on or after November 12, passengers are required to check in online and present their DBP at the airport to receive a printed boarding pass, which must be shown for boarding.
In addition to displaying the DBP, the Ryanair App offers various useful features before boarding, as detailed on the airline’s website. CEO Michael O’Leary reassures passengers that losing a mobile device will not hinder boarding, as alternative arrangements can be made at the airport.
Passengers will receive reminders to check in online 24 to 48 hours before departure to avoid fees, which vary depending on the departure location. Further information on these changes can be found on Ryanair’s website for a seamless travel experience.
