During the end of summer, pillows are prone to discoloration or staining due to increased perspiration in warmer weather. However, there is a simple method to restore them to a fresh appearance.
Carrie Higgins, known for her book Organization Hacks and as the founder of Making Lemonade, has shared valuable insights on washing pillows. She emphasizes that pillows harbor bacteria and mold, accumulating various residues over nightly use.
According to Higgins, pillows accumulate debris over time, making them breeding grounds for germs. However, restoring discolored pillows to their original white state doesn’t have to be time-consuming or expensive. Higgins suggests using white vinegar as a powerful stain remover.
Despite its unconventional nature, vinegar is a potent natural cleaner due to its acidity, effectively breaking down organic stains like sweat and oils commonly found on pillows. Apart from stain removal, vinegar also acts as an antibacterial agent and a natural deodorizer, eliminating bacteria and odors from the fabric.
Higgins attests to the effectiveness of vinegar in rejuvenating pillows, stating that even heavily soiled ones can be cleaned in a single wash cycle. Before proceeding, always check the pillow label to ensure it is machine washable, as certain materials may not be suitable for this method.
To wash the pillows, avoid overcrowding the washing machine and wash two pillows at a time. Add 250ml of white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment along with your regular detergent. Opt for a fragrance-free detergent like All Free and Clear to maintain the pillows’ freshness.
Select the highest water temperature recommended on the care label and run a delicate wash cycle. Once the wash is complete, spin the pillows to remove excess moisture. If any stubborn stains persist, consider running the pillows through a second wash cycle.
For drying, use a tumble dryer on a low-heat setting with wool dryer balls for added fluffiness. Alternatively, air-dry the pillows outdoors to benefit from natural brightening effects of sunlight. Ensure the pillows are completely dry to prevent mold growth and odors, resulting in refreshed and comfortable bedding for a good night’s sleep.
Higgins concludes by noting that the pillows will look pristine and ready to be showcased after the cleaning process.
