Thousands of households may receive additional payments and aid with energy bills soon from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the Scottish Government. The support includes three monetary payments and one payment directly to energy providers, totaling up to £519.75.
While most of these benefits are not expected until November, it is advisable to plan ahead for the increased energy costs during the colder months. This news follows reports of DWP state pensioners potentially receiving an extra £352 without any charges.
Over nine million pensioners in England and Wales will automatically get this year’s Winter Fuel Payment after the UK Government reversed its decision to limit the heating allowance. Payments of £200 or £300 will be given to eligible pensioners later this year, depending on their age.
Pensioners with an annual income exceeding £35,000 will not qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment and will need to repay the amount through tax returns. An opt-out option is available until September 15 for those not wishing to receive the payment.
The Scottish Government will also implement the same policy change for pensioners born before September 22, 1959. In Scotland, the Winter Fuel Payment has been replaced with the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment, ranging from £101.70 to £305.10.
The Warm Home Discount Scheme for this winter is set to open in October, offering a £150 reduction on electricity bills for eligible individuals. The payment will be made between October and March, with options for credit customers and those on Pay As You Go meters.
The DWP Christmas Bonus is a tax-free £10 payment for individuals on State Pension or certain benefits, usually received in early December. Eligible beneficiaries need not apply for this bonus, as it is automatically deposited in their designated accounts.
If you are eligible for the Winter Heating Payment, you will receive it in early November without the need for an application. Visit the MYGOV.SCOT website for more information on eligibility and payments.
