Former Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington has recently shared that her earnings have decreased since the start of the pandemic as she reflects on her life post-Olympics. Following her retirement from competitive swimming in 2013, Adlington diversified her career into sports commentary, reality TV appearances, and co-founding ‘Swim!’ with fellow Olympian Steve Parry, a nationwide children’s swimming program with 12 locations.
Despite previously generating significant income from her various ventures, Adlington discussed her financial situation with The Times.
She mentioned, “My income has significantly dropped over the past few years. However, it has become more stable due to my role as a director in the swimming business I co-own. I also have additional part-time income sources such as public speaking, brand collaborations, campaigns, and TV appearances.”
Adlington added, “A large part of my income from these activities has decreased. I am nowhere near my pre-pandemic earnings, especially considering the peak of my career during London 2012. The competition among Olympians has increased since then, impacting the demand.”
Recalling her inspiration from the London Olympics, Adlington expressed, “The London Olympics motivated me to start the business. I always aimed for grassroots involvement rather than coaching, leading to the development of our swimming facilities with Steve [Parry].”
Despite her financial changes, Adlington and her family reside in a five-bedroom house in Cheshire, which she considers her “dream home.” She humorously mentioned the absence of a swimming pool due to budget constraints.
Her journey into property ownership began at 20 with a £150,000 new-build in Nottingham, a decision influenced by her desire to stop spending on rent.
When asked about financial concerns, Adlington responded, “I have been fortunate with my family’s support and the opportunities that followed Beijing when I was 19. Sponsorships and funding post-Beijing significantly impacted my life and ability to provide for my family.”
Her most profitable experience was on ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’ where she earned around £70,000. Reflecting on the show, she expressed her initial apprehension due to her unfamiliarity with camping but ultimately found the experience amazing.
