The demolition of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School this week held personal significance for Chris Norbury, a long-time resident whose wife was present during the tragic mass shooting in February. Norbury, along with other community members, gathered to witness the beginning of the demolition process on Monday.
“This marks a new chapter for Tumbler Ridge and its students,” Norbury expressed, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the needs and emotions of those affected by the events.
The iconic brown-bricked school, built in the 1980s during the town’s coal mining era, has been a place of cherished memories for generations of students over the past four decades. However, following the tragic incident in February, both students and teachers expressed a unanimous desire not to return to the school, paving the way for its removal.
Norbury remarked, “To move forward from this tragedy, we must close old chapters and embrace new beginnings. This process is essential for our community’s healing journey.”
As preparations for a new school progress, students have temporarily shifted to a campus with additional facilities, including modular classrooms and administrative offices. The School District 59 board is focused on providing a safe and conducive learning environment, offering support for students who may require additional assistance.
Looking ahead, discussions are underway regarding the future use of the school site, with plans for a public memorial and potential permanent memorials. Mayor Darryl Krakowka highlighted the importance of considering the wishes of the victims’ families in shaping the town’s recovery plan.
The community is engaging in a long-term recovery strategy, with ongoing support from government entities. The emphasis remains on listening to the needs of students, families, and residents to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive approach to rebuilding the community.
The prospect of a new centrally located school with modern facilities and specialty programs has generated optimism among residents like Norbury, who eagerly anticipate the positive impact it will bring to Tumbler Ridge.
The community looks forward to the day when the new school opens its doors, symbolizing a fresh start and a hopeful future for all involved.
