Jessica Pegula, known for being one of the wealthiest figures in the tennis world, has suggested that Andy Murray might have taken on the role of Novak Djokovic’s coach out of sheer curiosity. Just a few months after retiring from professional tennis in the summer of 2024, Murray surprised the tennis community by announcing his decision to coach the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
The two tennis icons joined forces leading up to the Australian Open, where Djokovic reached the semi-finals before withdrawing due to injury. In May, it was revealed that their coaching partnership had come to an end by mutual agreement, only six months after it began.
During an episode of The Players Box podcast featuring Jennifer Brady, Desirae Krawczyk, and Madison Keys, Pegula, whose net worth is around £15 million with a potential inheritance of £5.5 billion, suggested that Murray may have been intrigued by the chance to gain insights into Djokovic’s mindset.
Pegula remarked, “I think he was so interested in understanding Djokovic’s perspective and how he approaches the game. It was fascinating to see them interacting during events like the Australian Open.”
Keys also expressed her view that the collaboration between Murray and Djokovic was unique, emphasizing the value of gaining an inside look into Djokovic’s strategies and mindset.
Despite parting ways, both Murray and Djokovic have shared their perspectives on their coaching arrangement. Murray revealed that he saw coaching Djokovic as a unique opportunity that he wanted to explore, while Djokovic acknowledged the mutual decision to end their partnership, highlighting the learning experience and respect he gained from working with Murray.
