Ikea is preparing to unveil its latest store in Brighton, a move that will bring over 150 new jobs to the city. The new store, the first of its kind in Sussex, will open today, taking over a former Debenhams location and offering approximately 6,700 square meters of retail space spread across two floors.
Mark Buchanan-Smith, the manager of Churchill Square, expressed his enthusiasm for having Ikea as the main anchor in the area. However, Martha Tiffin, a local shop owner at Utility, voiced concerns about competition with the retail giant, acknowledging the challenges faced by small businesses in the wake of increasing online shopping trends.
In a strategic move, Ikea’s parent company, Ingka, acquired the Churchill Square shopping center for an estimated £145 million in November 2023. The new Ikea store, though smaller than typical locations, will offer delivery services and click-and-collect options for certain furniture items.
Previously, Ikea had planned a larger store in Lancing, but the project was canceled in 2021 due to shifting consumer behaviors. Residents of Brighton and Hove City Council welcomed the new store as a positive development, bringing fresh employment opportunities and economic investment to the region.
While some local businesses like Diplock’s Yard feel unaffected by the Ikea opening, others express concerns about the impact on foot traffic and customer patterns in the area. Ikea Manager Karina Gilpin highlighted the store’s comprehensive offerings, including home essentials and food options, emphasizing the company’s commitment to sharing Swedish cuisine with the Brighton community.
