Actor Idris Elba has been knighted in the New Year Honours List for his advocacy against youth violence. Alongside him, other notable figures like comedians Bill Bailey and Matt Lucas, actress Cynthia Erivo, and Chuckle Brother Paul Elliot have also been honored. Sir Idris, recognized for his efforts to combat youth knife violence, launched the Don’t Stop Your Future campaign last year by symbolizing lives lost to knife violence with piles of clothes.
Born to a Sierra Leonean father and a Ghanaian mother, the 53-year-old Sir Idris grew up in Hackney, East London, and received support from the King’s Trust to pursue his career in acting, filmmaking, and music. Together with his wife Sabrina Dhowre Elba, he established the Elba Hope Foundation, dedicated to promoting community empowerment, education, youth advocacy, and sustainable development.
Renowned sitcom creator Roy Clarke, responsible for classics like ‘The Last of The Summer Wine’ and ‘Keeping Up Appearances,’ has been knighted for his contributions to TV comedy. Similarly, comedy actress Meera Syal was honored with a damehood for her achievements in literature, drama, and charity work. Meera, known for her work in ‘Goodness Gracious Me’ and ‘The Kumars at No 42,’ has also excelled as a writer and novelist.
In the sports realm, the Lionesses, England’s successful women’s football team, received various honors following their Euros victory. Captain Leah Williamson was awarded a CBE, while players like Alex Greenwood, Keira Walsh, Georgia Stanway, and Ella Toone received MBEs. Their manager, Sarina Wiegman, was bestowed with an honorary damehood for her leadership.
Ice skating icons Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, Olympic champions and beloved judges on Dancing On Ice, were knighted and damehooded, respectively. The duo expressed their gratitude for the recognition, stating that it was a humbling experience. Additionally, the Red Roses, England’s women’s rugby team, were honored with OBEs and MBEs for their World Cup triumph.
