An enthusiastic hiker and her cherished canine companion narrowly escaped a 60-foot fall onto sharp rocks while descending a mountain.
Margaux Cohen, accompanied by her dog Zion and two friends, had just conquered Tricouni Peak in British Columbia, Canada on August 24. While navigating the descent off the trail, they encountered an obstacle that required them to traverse a small wall.
During this maneuver, Zion, the pet dog, slipped off the edge, prompting Ms. Cohen to instinctively grab his harness. The duo plummeted approximately 18 meters (60 feet) but remarkably survived the ordeal.
In an interview with local news outlet Squamish Chief, Ms. Cohen recounted the harrowing experience, mentioning how she tumbled multiple times during the fall, sustaining injuries to her face and leg. Despite her broken leg, she remained conscious and was relieved to find Zion beside her, albeit with an injured paw.
Following a two-hour rescue operation by Squamish Search and Rescue, Ms. Cohen was airlifted to a hospital in Vancouver where she underwent surgery for her leg injury. She now faces a lengthy recovery period, expecting months of rehabilitation before resuming normal activities.
A fundraising campaign initiated by her friend Emily Kasal aims to alleviate the financial burden on Ms. Cohen and Zion, who are confronted with escalating medical expenses and potential loss of income due to their injuries. The campaign has already raised nearly £7,000.
Those willing to contribute can visit the GoFundMe page set up by Emily, where she praises Ms. Cohen’s character and appeals for support during this challenging period. The community’s generosity and the efforts of Squamish Search and Rescue are acknowledged with gratitude for their crucial assistance during the incident.
