The individual hailed as the ‘hero of Bondi Beach’ has reached out to people globally to include him in their prayers as his health deteriorated during his stay in New York. Currently in the US for medical treatment following the gun wounds sustained while intervening in an incident at Bondi Beach, he disarmed one of the alleged shooters, gaining worldwide attention for his brave actions captured on camera and shared widely.
In a recent Instagram video, the visibly unwell Mr. al-Ahmed is seen lying in a hotel bed, surrounded by well-wishers and visitors. He expressed his health setback, mentioning the cancellation of appointments due to sudden hand swelling and severe pain, leading to three surgical procedures.
Reflecting on his situation, he shared, “When the pain resurfaces post-medication, I feel disheartened. However, the knowledge that I acted to safeguard innocent lives and the outpouring of love and well wishes for my recovery bring hope, positivity, and joy.”
The Sydney resident, shot multiple times during the December 14 terrorist attack that claimed 15 lives, is undergoing specialized treatment in the US. One of the attackers, Naveed Akram, faces 59 charges, including 15 murder counts, while his father, Sajid Akram, was fatally shot by law enforcement at the scene.
Expressing gratitude to those who visited him despite the canceled meetings, he acknowledged the kindness and concern shown towards him. He urged continued prayer support.
The unfortunate health update coincided with his meeting with former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, whom he described as an honor to meet. Mr. al-Ahmed also interacted with United States officials during his visit to the Congress in New York.
During these post-attack encounters, various politicians, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Chris Minns, visited Mr. Ahmed in the hospital, praising him as a national hero. Mr. Albanese commended him as “the best of our country,” while the NSW Premier hailed him as a “real-life hero.”
Describing his mindset during the intense moment confronting the gunman, Mr. Ahmed shared his emotional turmoil and the inner drive to prevent further bloodshed and harm, motivated by a deep sense of responsibility to protect lives.
