Halfords has revealed that it will shut down all its stores on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day this year. The decision aims to allow employees throughout the UK to have a well-deserved break and spend quality time with their families. While Halfords outlets will be closed on Christmas Day as well, they will operate as usual on all other days during the holiday season.
Henry Birch, the Chief Executive Officer at Halfords, emphasized the dedication of the staff who work tirelessly year-round to serve customers. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging their hard work and providing them with the opportunity to relax and enjoy time with loved ones. Birch stated that closing stores on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day is a gesture of gratitude to ensure the team returns refreshed for the upcoming year.
The move follows Halfords reporting increased sales and profits in the past six months. Cycling business sales surged by 9% in the first half of the year ending on September 26 compared to the previous year, contributing to a 3.3% rise in total revenues to £893.3 million. Additionally, the motoring and autocentres divisions saw growth in like-for-like revenues.
Apart from Halfords, Home Bargains has also decided to keep its stores closed on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, continuing a tradition from previous years. The supermarket chain Aldi will also shut its doors on December 26 and New Year’s Day to allow its employees to enjoy the festive season with their families. Aldi will extend its operating hours leading up to Christmas to accommodate customer needs.
Overall, these closures reflect a growing trend among retailers to prioritize employee well-being and offer time off during the holiday season for rest and relaxation.
