A family in Luton faced a terrifying ordeal as a gunman fired shots at their front door while a woman inside urgently called emergency services for help, pleading for the safety of her children. The alarming incident, captured on a Ring doorbell camera, unfolded as part of a major organized crime investigation in the UK, following police infiltration of an encrypted phone network used by criminal entities.
The disturbing footage shows a masked individual approaching the residence, retrieving a double-barrelled shotgun from a backpack, and shooting at the entrance. The distressed family member, speaking broken English to a police dispatcher, reported the gunfire and the presence of children inside the house, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
This incident is featured in an upcoming episode of “24 Hours in Police Custody” titled “The Secret Network,” documenting the efforts of Bedfordshire Police to dismantle an underground criminal communication platform. The investigation, stemming from the decryption of the secretive EncroChat system by international law enforcement agencies, uncovered a wealth of incriminating evidence.
The episode follows detectives as they monitor criminal conversations regarding illicit arms and drug transactions. Notably, suspect Ethan Mitchell, known as “frontrunner” on the platform, evaded charges related to the shooting but was sentenced to nine years for drug-related offenses, including the possession and distribution of MDMA and cocaine.
Furthermore, Mitchell’s involvement in a high-speed pursuit and subsequent arrest led to the seizure of narcotics, cash amounting to approximately £40,000, and evidence linking him to criminal activities. His incarceration was part of Operation Costello, Bedfordshire Police’s contribution to the broader crackdown on criminal networks facilitated by the Encrochat system.
The law enforcement operation unveiled the hidden identities of numerous criminals communicating through encrypted channels, with key individuals like Kamran Bashir, Blazej Holub, and Ibraz Iqbal identified by their online aliases. Bashir and Holub were sentenced to 16 years and three months each, while Iqbal received a prison term of 12 years and seven months for their drug trafficking activities.
The dismantling of the EncroChat network, which prevented over 200 potential murders and led to the arrest of prominent crime figures and corrupt officials, resulted in the seizure of £54 million in illicit funds, massive drug quantities, and an array of firearms. Notorious drug lord Jordan Talbot, sentenced to 21 years and nine months, exemplifies the significant impact of the operation on criminal enterprises.
Other individuals, such as Gary Mitchell and Carl Stewart, faced severe penalties due to incriminating evidence obtained from their online activities. The thorough investigation also exposed Steven Strachan as a clandestine drug dealer operating under the pseudonym “fastsilver,” resulting in his imprisonment for six years.
“The Secret Network” episode of “24 Hours in Police Custody” offers a glimpse into the relentless pursuit of justice against organized crime, airing on Channel 4 on Tuesday at 9 pm.
