Rachael Blackmore, a retired racing champion, and fellow jockey Brian Hayes are expecting their first child together. The couple recently got married in a cozy ceremony in West Cork on January 5, after a decade-long friendship.
The 36-year-old Rachael shared the exciting news through her Instagram story, featuring a picture of her Volvo car with a baby pram in the boot. She expressed her joy, mentioning the change in the car’s contents now that they are expecting. Rachael, known for her groundbreaking achievements in horse racing, retired last year, having made history as the first female jockey to win the Grand National and becoming the leading jockey at Cheltenham.
Originally from Tipperary, Rachael amassed an impressive 575 wins during her professional racing career before retiring in May last year. Her retirement followed her remarkable victory with Minella Times at Aintree in 2021. She was also the top rider at the Cheltenham Festival in 2021, winning 18 races including all five championship contests.
Rachael’s outstanding performances included victories in prestigious races such as the Champion Hurdle, Cheltenham Gold Cup, Ryanair Chase, Queen Mother Champion Chase, and Stayers’ Hurdle. Her achievements led to accolades such as the World Sports Star at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards in 2021 and induction into Cheltenham racecourse’s hall of fame.
Having known each other for over ten years and previously living together with friend Patrick Mullins, son of renowned jump trainer Willie Mullins, Rachael and Brian have a strong bond. Despite both being jockeys, they seldom discuss racing in their household, as Rachael mentioned in 2021.
Acknowledging Brian’s significant support in her career, Rachael expressed gratitude towards him upon her retirement, recognizing his pivotal role. The couple has been seen together at various events, including Wimbledon, music festivals, and vacations. Brian, aged 34, has had a successful 17-year career as a jockey, riding for prominent personalities like Willie Mullins and securing one Cheltenham Festival win.
