Google has announced that it will no longer support its Chrome browser on older versions of Apple’s macOS for MacBook users. While Chrome will still function on MacBooks and iMacs, there will be no more updates or security patches provided, leaving users potentially exposed to security threats and software issues.
The change will impact Mac devices running macOS 12 (Monterey) or earlier, as Google will cease Chrome updates for these systems. Users on these platforms will need to upgrade to a newer operating system like macOS Ventura to receive continued browser support.
Unfortunately, some older Mac models, including iMacs predating 2017 and MacBook Airs purchased before 2018, may not be compatible with macOS Ventura. This could mean that affected users will need to consider purchasing a new device to ensure secure Chrome usage. The update is set to take effect starting July of this year.
According to Google’s blog post, Chrome version 150 will be the final release supporting macOS 12 (Monterey). Subsequent versions, starting with Chrome 151, will require macOS 13 Ventura or later. Users are advised to upgrade to a supported macOS version to access future Chrome updates and security features.
While older Chrome versions will still operate, no further updates will be available for users on macOS 12. Google recommends transitioning to macOS 13 or newer to ensure ongoing security updates and access to the latest Chrome functionalities.
