Millions of Gmail users will soon have the option to switch to a new email address. Google had previously hinted at this update, and it is now being rolled out globally. In an update on its Gmail blog page, Google has confirmed that users can change their Google Account email ending in gmail.com to a new address with the same ending.
This update may be well-received, especially for users who want to change their current email address for various reasons. However, Google has mentioned an ‘important’ note about this feature.
Google states that the ability to change the email address is gradually being made available to all users, so some users may not have access to it yet. The new system will allow users to have both their old and new email addresses active simultaneously, ensuring that emails sent to the current address are automatically forwarded to the new one.
Furthermore, Google assures users that their account data will not be impacted by this change. All photos, messages, and emails associated with the original email address will remain unaffected.
To check if you can switch to a new Gmail address without losing any emails, follow these steps:
– Visit myaccount.google.com/google-account-email on your computer and sign in if prompted.
– Click on Personal info in the top-left corner.
– Select Email, then Google Account email.
– Under “Google Account email,” click Change Google Account email.
– If the option is not available, it may not be accessible to you yet.
– Enter the new username you wish to use, ensuring it is unique and not previously used.
– Click Change email and confirm by selecting Yes, change email.
– Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
Once done, your new Gmail address will become your primary account email, while the old address will remain as an alternate email.
