Former Red Bull executive Richard Hopkins has offered an update on the health status of Michael Schumacher and shared his belief that the Formula 1 legend may not be seen in public again. Schumacher, a seven-time world champion, suffered a severe head injury in a skiing accident in December 2013, leading to a veil of privacy surrounding his condition.
Since the accident nearly 12 years ago, Schumacher’s health details have been closely guarded, including his induced coma following the incident. Hopkins, who worked alongside Schumacher during his time at Red Bull and developed a strong bond with the racing icon, emphasized the importance of respecting the family’s desire for privacy regarding Schumacher’s well-being.
In a recent interview with SPORTbible via William Hill, Hopkins mentioned his limited knowledge about Schumacher’s current state, noting the family’s preference for confidentiality. He expressed his reservations about discussing Schumacher’s condition openly, citing the family’s wish to maintain secrecy for valid reasons.
Despite their friendship dating back to the 1990s when they crossed paths at McLaren and later at Red Bull, Hopkins acknowledged that he is not part of Schumacher’s inner circle, which includes individuals like Jean Todt, Ross Brawn, and Gerhard Berger, who have closer access to the legendary driver. Hopkins underscored the importance of respecting the family’s wishes for privacy, even if he were privy to Schumacher’s condition.
While reflecting on the tight-lipped nature of those close to Schumacher, Hopkins highlighted the mutual understanding and respect that exists among visitors to Schumacher, emphasizing the family’s desire for information to remain confidential. He emphasized the importance of honoring the family’s wishes and the need for discretion, even if he possessed any insights into Schumacher’s health, out of respect for the family’s privacy.
