Emergency services launched a search for potential casualties in a Greater Manchester town following a fire outbreak at an abandoned pub. The incident occurred on York Street in Heywood, Rochdale, where the former White Lion pub was engulfed in flames. Firefighters from the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) swiftly responded to the scene upon receiving reports of the fire at the commercial property.
In a visible display of smoke emanating from the building, a thorough search for potential victims was conducted, but fortunately, no casualties were found. The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.
This event unfolded at the White Lion pub, which had been closed since a tragic accident in July 2024. The fatal crash resulted in the death of a university graduate named Will Place, who lost his life when his vehicle collided with the pub and ignited a destructive fire. The crash, which transpired after a police pursuit on Bolton Road, led to a massive blaze that required a rapid response from fire crews.
The GMFRS spokesperson reported that three fire engines from Rochdale and Bury fire stations promptly arrived at the scene and successfully extinguished the fire on the first floor of the building using hose reels. Ongoing safety checks are being conducted to secure the area and ensure the building’s stability.
