Eilish McColgan aims to achieve victory in the upcoming Great North Run, hoping to follow the success of her mother, Liz, who previously won the prestigious event. McColgan narrowly missed out on winning in the last edition, but she is determined to secure the top spot this time around during the half marathon from Newcastle to South Shields.
Expressing her excitement, McColgan mentioned the race’s iconic status and her ambition to emerge victorious, acknowledging the strong competition she will face. Despite her injury setbacks in recent years, the 34-year-old athlete, who secured Commonwealth 10,000m gold earlier in her career, made her marathon debut in London, breaking her mother’s Scottish record.
Looking ahead, McColgan sees the Great North Run as a crucial step in her preparation for the upcoming New York marathon in November. She emphasized the importance of completing a marathon to boost her confidence and mentioned her determination to make up for the lost time in her career.
In the elite men’s race, Marc Scott leads Britain’s contenders, aiming to replicate his previous success. However, he faces tough competition from defending champion Abel Kipchumba, Alex Mutiso Munyao, and Bashir Abdi.
