DWP & HMRC Announce Early Benefit Payments in August

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and HMRC are preparing to adjust the payment schedule for ten means-tested benefits in the upcoming days. As a result, individuals who rely on welfare payments like Universal Credit will see a shift in their payment dates. When bank holidays or weekends coincide with payment days, the funds are typically disbursed on the preceding working day. Consequently, payments due on August 25 will be issued on August 22 instead. Those anticipating payments on August 23 or 24 will also receive their funds on August 22. This alteration follows concerns raised about potential losses for state pensioners due to a £10,000 rule issue.

The DWP and HMRC will release these benefits ahead of schedule in August. The payment amounts will remain unchanged unless there have been alterations in circumstances affecting the entitlement.

Recipients of early payments are advised to manage their funds prudently as they will have to wait longer until the subsequent payment date. In case of non-receipt of the expected payment on August 22, individuals should promptly contact the DWP. Any discrepancies in payments can be reported to the relevant government department for resolution.

Furthermore, parents are encouraged to act promptly to avoid disruptions in their Child Benefit payments. HMRC is requesting updates on future education plans from parents of teenagers. Child Benefit, currently at £26.05 a week for the eldest or only child, decreases to £17.25 a week for additional children. Payments automatically cease on/after a child’s 16th birthday unless parents renew their claims for children continuing in education.

Parents must inform HMRC before August 31 if their children are pursuing further education to continue receiving Child Benefit. Eligibility for the benefit extends until the child turns 19 and enrolls in approved education or apprenticeship programs. Child Benefit also remains applicable for children engaged in specific unpaid training courses.
