Another Costa Coffee branch has closed down, joining a growing number of over a dozen closures in the past year. The Costa located on Marlborough High Street in Wiltshire was shut last month, leaving the local community saddened.
Reports from local sources indicate that the premises have been completely cleared out, removing all Costa branding. No official reason has been given for the closure of the popular coffee shop on Marlborough High Street.
A Costa spokesperson confirmed that the store ceased operations on July 17, 2025. This closure follows a recent warning to UK households regarding Nescafé coffee. The majority of the staff members have been transferred to other Costa Coffee stores in nearby areas.
Residents of Marlborough expressed their grief over losing their beloved local café. One regular customer described it as a significant loss for the town, while another lamented the closure as unfortunate, highlighting the shop’s reputation as a great coffee spot.
The challenges faced by British high streets are widely known, with retailers struggling against online competition, high rental costs, increasing wage expenses, and reduced consumer spending.
Recent data from the British Retail Consortium-Sensormatic reveals that one in seven shops in the UK now stands vacant. Additionally, summer retail activity has not seen the expected boost for the second consecutive year, with a decrease in overall UK footfall by 0.4% in July compared to the previous year, and a 1.7% drop in high street visits.
Costa Coffee, the UK’s largest coffee chain, was acquired by Coca-Cola in a £3.9 billion deal in 2019. The brand operates more than 2,700 stores in the UK, Ireland, and globally. Despite its extensive reach, Costa Coffee has faced declining sales in recent years, leading to the closure of multiple branches.
This trend may be attributed to a two-year consumer boycott against companies involved in conflicts, which impacted brands like McDonald’s, Starbucks, and Zara.
The Standard has compiled a list of Costa Coffee outlets that have shut down since September 2024.
