Corinne Bailey Rae: From Tragedy to Triumph

Corinne Bailey Rae, the accomplished singer, faced immense sorrow when her first husband, Jason Rae, passed away at the young age of 31, leaving her devastated at 29. Reflecting on that dark period, Corinne expressed how it initially felt like the end of everything she knew but later realized it marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life.

Now, at 46, Corinne acknowledges feeling blessed every day, embracing aging as a celebration of life’s experiences. Growing up in Leeds within a working-class family, Corinne’s music is a reflection of her diverse background and the profound impact of life’s challenges.

Music became Corinne’s solace during her grieving period, allowing her to channel her raw emotions into her album “The Sea,” released following her husband’s tragic passing. Supported by close friends and family, Corinne found comfort in expressing her feelings and memories of Jason.

Despite the hardships, Corinne found love again and married long-time friend Steve Brown in 2013. As a dedicated mother to her two young daughters, aged five and seven, Corinne emphasizes the importance of cherishing moments with her family and focusing on what truly matters.

Balancing a busy life of touring, recording, and writing children’s books, Corinne remains committed to staying present for her family. Her upcoming children’s book, inspired by her hit song “Put Your Records On,” is a testament to her creative endeavors influenced by her experiences as a mother.

As she navigates the demands of her career and family life, Corinne remains introspective about the world her daughters are growing up in, hoping for a future filled with possibilities and inclusivity. Her album “Black Rainbows” delves into themes of race, identity, and history, reflecting her desire for a world where individuals can express their authentic selves.

Music remains a central element in Corinne’s home life, fostering family connections and joyful moments. Encouraged by younger artists sharing their stories openly, Corinne values the power of music in inspiring and connecting people across diverse backgrounds.

As Corinne looks ahead to her future projects, including a new children’s book and a significant US tour, she reflects on her fulfilling two-decade career, grateful for her family, her work, and the gift of life itself. Corinne’s illustrated children’s book, “Put Your Records On,” is set to release in early March 2026.
