Conor Benn has criticized his competitor Chris Eubank Jr for adopting a ‘victim mentality’ following the release of a video showing Eubank Jr receiving medical treatment in a hospital. The footage depicted Eubank Jr, aged 36, lying still on a bed connected to medical devices and surrounded by healthcare personnel.
The video generated considerable sympathy from fans, with some suggesting that Eubank Jr should consider retirement, especially after his loss to Benn in a unanimous decision rematch at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in November. Benn, however, questioned the motives behind Eubank Jr’s video post, implying that it was a ploy to gain sympathy.
In an interview with the Mail, the 29-year-old Benn revealed that Eubank Jr had health issues during his training camp and after the fight, but Benn downplayed the severity of the conditions. Benn emphasized the need to understand the underlying reasons for Eubank Jr’s actions, pointing out a recurring pattern of seeking sympathy and portraying a victim mentality.
Benn highlighted his own undisclosed challenges, such as the struggle to make weight for a fight in Vegas without seeking public sympathy. He emphasized the demanding nature of the sport, likening fighters to modern-day gladiators who persevere through various adversities without complaining.
Despite the health issues, Eubank Jr affirmed his intention not to retire, stating on social media platform X that he would only return to boxing when fully recovered. He expressed gratitude to his supporters and vowed to make a strong comeback in the future.
