Android users are facing a concerning new threat targeting their devices, according to security experts at Bitdefender. The Brokewell malware has been rapidly infecting devices, enabling cybercriminals to spy on users, steal messages, control phones remotely, and obtain security codes for unauthorized access.
The malware is spreading through a deceptive tactic where users are enticed to click on social media ads offering free access to premium financial services. Upon clicking the ad, users are prompted to download an app, leading to the malware installation.
Bitdefender’s analysis revealed that the ongoing malicious ad campaign has utilized 75 harmful ads, potentially impacting thousands of users in the EU. The ads falsely promise a free TradingView Premium app but deliver the Brokewell malware instead.
To prevent further victims, Bitdefender has issued four safety guidelines. Users are advised to refrain from sideloading apps and only download from official stores like Google Play, remain cautious of ads on platforms like Facebook, scrutinize URLs for authenticity, and review app permissions to identify suspicious requests.
Android users are urged to follow these recommendations to safeguard against the Brokewell malware and protect their devices from unauthorized access and data theft.
