Asda is preparing to launch up to 20 new convenience stores later this year.
The inaugural Asda Express store is scheduled to debut in Castleford at the beginning of October, followed by additional openings in various locations later the same month. These stores will carry around 3,000 branded and own-label products, including essential items like milk and bread.
The upcoming stores will be situated in urban areas, residential neighborhoods, and transportation hubs. This initiative follows Asda’s successful acquisition of 469 convenience store and fuel sites from Co-op and EG Group. Asda introduced its initial Express store in 2022.
David Lepley, Chief Supply Chain Officer, expressed excitement about launching the next phase of the Express rollout. He emphasized the progress made in establishing nearly 500 stores in the convenience channel over the past three years.
Lepley further stated, “This continued investment demonstrates our confidence in the convenience strategy and commitment to extending Asda’s competitive prices to more local communities.”
Asda recently revealed plans to revamp 180 of its in-store cafes with a £180 million investment. The enhancements will include digital ordering screens, table ordering service, and traditional manned tills.
A new menu will feature items such as smashed avocado on toast, katsu chicken curry, salad bowls, wraps, nachos, loaded fries, and Asda pizzas in various flavors. The menu will also include flavored iced coffees, cakes, and classic favorites like full English breakfast, fish and chips, lasagne, jacket potatoes, and burger and chips.
The refurbishment project, managed by partner Compass Group, is anticipated to conclude by the end of October. Asda currently operates 205 cafes and will continue offering its popular Kids Eat for £1 promotion.
