Nigel Farage’s introduction of a Conservative defector took a negative turn when allegations surfaced accusing the new member of mistreating a female staff member. The Reform UK leader, Nigel Farage, was informed that Graham Simpson, a Scottish Conservative MSP who switched to Reform, reportedly apologized to a young female staff member for inappropriate behavior and bullying. Farage dismissed the claims, while Simpson vehemently denied them.
During a press event in Scotland, a journalist shared a comment from a Tory source criticizing Graham Simpson, prompting responses from Farage and Simpson. Farage emphasized that they conduct thorough research before accepting new members and expressed satisfaction with Simpson joining them despite the political mudslinging. Simpson addressed the negativity surrounding his defection, calling it unwarranted.
In a blow to Tory leader Kemi Badenoch, Graham Simpson’s move to Reform marked his transition as the party’s first MSP to join Farage on stage in West Lothian. Following a trend of Conservative politicians defecting to Reform, Simpson, a former Tory frontbencher, reflected on his departure from the party he had been a part of since his teenage years.
Simpson acknowledged feeling conflicted about leaving the Scottish Conservatives, especially since he was elected on the party’s regional list at Holyrood. Despite concerns about voter support, he clarified that the rules allowed him to retain his seat despite the switch.
Earlier this year, former Tory chairman Sir Jake Berry switched to Reform UK, citing dissatisfaction with the Conservative Party’s direction. His defection followed others like former Wales secretary David Jones and Minister Dame Andrea Jenkyns. Responding to the defections, Kemi Badenoch criticized the departing members for prioritizing personal gain over political integrity, likening their actions to those seen in unstable political environments.
