Thomas Frank received indications that his tenure at Spurs was coming to an end before any official announcement was made. Speculation on social media suggested that Harry Redknapp, a 78-year-old owner of a successful Cheltenham Gold Cup contender, should replace Frank at Tottenham Hotspur.
Some voices proposed that Redknapp should step in for the remainder of the season following Frank’s departure. Notably, Redknapp has not managed a Premier League game in over eleven years and had a less than stellar record in his final matches as a Premier League manager, winning only nine out of his last 48 games.
The suggestions regarding Redknapp, including input from former players, were viewed by many as a jest due to the improbability of such a move. However, for Frank, the situation was no laughing matter as the performance of his Tottenham team in domestic competitions necessitated his dismissal.
Frank’s record at Tottenham was marked by a disappointing average of 1.12 points per game, the lowest among Spurs managers with more than five matches in charge in Premier League history. The team’s form had been deteriorating, having not won a Premier League game in 2026 and securing victory in only two of their last 17 matches.
Despite the evident disconnect between Frank and the Spurs fanbase, external factors, such as a series of injuries to key players starting with James Maddison’s ACL injury, contributed to Frank’s struggles in maintaining his position. The significant number of games missed by key players due to injuries was notably high, and luck did not seem to be on Frank’s side.
The team’s Premier League performances reflected a period of poor results, including four draws and four defeats in the initial eight games of 2026. Notably, some losses were characterized by late goals, such as conceding in the 90th minute against Bournemouth and West Ham.
Despite the challenges, there were instances where Tottenham showed promise, like battling back to draw against Manchester City and securing a place in the last 16 of the Champions League under Frank’s guidance.
