A surveillance video has captured the alarming incident of a package exploding at the reception area of a building in the popular tourist destination, Istanbul..
The suspicious parcel was delivered to the reception of an apartment complex in the bustling city of Istanbul and placed on the front counter in the lobby. Surveillance footage recorded the moment when a man tried to open the package, leading to the catastrophic explosion.
The small package then exploded, injuring the man and two building employees with smoke and flames. The force of the blast sent items from the reception desk flying across the ground floor. Debris, papers, and broken glass littered the area. As the smoke cleared, the two staff members hurriedly left the scene while the man who had attempted to open the package backed away, covering his mouth.
The reception space sustained significant damage, leaving a noticeable clean spot where the package had been placed. According to The Sun, CCTV footage revealed that a delivery driver had left the package moments before the explosion.
Both staff members suffered minor injuries from the blast. Emergency services swiftly responded to the incident at the building in Zeytinburnu, Istanbul, on January 11. Police, paramedics, and firefighters promptly arrived at the reception area.
The injured staff members received initial treatment at the reception before being transported to a nearby hospital. They have since been discharged. Subsequently, the police cordoned off the building, and forensic teams conducted an investigation in collaboration with law enforcement.
The cause of the explosion remains unknown. As per reports from EN.Harberler, one of the injured employees, Harun Arkin, recounted the explosion, stating, “The delivery person arrived and mentioned the apartment. When the package arrived, there was no company logo on the courier.
“I became suspicious about the incident, and the resident of the apartment where the package originated also wanted to open it in the lobby due to suspicion.” Arkin mentioned that the box detonated while they were inspecting it, resulting in an injury to his eye.
Berra Köse was present during the explosion when the package was received. She stated, “The resident of the apartment tried to open the package in the lobby, leading to the incident. We had doubts about the arriving courier.”
The staff members were commended by the EVA Group, responsible for building security, for averting a more catastrophic event.
