“UK Steps Up Battle Against Russian Shadow Ships”

Britain is prepared to assist its allies in intercepting Russian shadow ships that are providing financial support to Vladimir Putin’s military efforts, as stated by the Foreign Secretary. Yvette Cooper emphasized the need to tighten control over Russia’s covert fleet, consisting of deteriorating oil tankers using deceptive flags to avoid Western sanctions. The UK is advocating for more proactive measures against these clandestine vessels, which are channeling funds to the Kremlin for aggression against Ukraine and causing harm to critical undersea cables.

Although British forces did not physically board any of these ships yet, they collaborated with the US in a bold operation to seize a tanker linked to Russia, accused of violating oil sanctions in Venezuela. Officials are reportedly exploring the legal framework for potential military intervention. Ms. Cooper recently visited a patrol vessel in Helsinki, where she met with the Finnish Border Guard members responsible for safeguarding the country’s extensive border against Russian threats.

During her visit, Ms. Cooper witnessed a demonstration of how Finnish Border Guards conduct vessel seizures, including a recent operation targeting a Russia-affiliated ship allegedly involved in sabotaging undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland. The Foreign Secretary stressed the significance of countering the Russian shadow fleet’s activities, which pose environmental and national security risks, including damage to vital cables. She also called for a complete ban on Russian oil shipments to cut off a crucial revenue source for Moscow.

The UK is closely monitoring enforcement actions by European partners against illicit vessels, particularly in the Baltic Sea and near the French coast, to address the escalating presence of Russian ships near British waters. Ms. Cooper highlighted the need for international collaboration to exert more significant pressure on the shadow fleet. She also engaged in discussions with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb during her Arctic Circle tour, focusing on heightened security concerns in the High North following recent geopolitical developments.

The Foreign Secretary underscored the UK’s commitment to enhancing maritime security and safeguarding national interests from potential threats within British waters. The government’s stance aligns with efforts to combat the growing presence of Russian vessels near UK territories.
