Jodie Ounsley, known as Fury on the TV show Gladiators, has likened the new season of the renowned program, hosted by Bradley Walsh and his son Barney, to entering a “battle.” Despite her background as a former England rugby player, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu British Champion, and five-time World Coal Carrying champion, she is accustomed to competing under pressure.
In 2024, Jodie joined the cast of powerhouse contestants for the show’s revival after an eight-year hiatus, receiving the moniker in recognition of her strength and competitive spirit.
Despite facing challenges, such as being born profoundly deaf and undergoing cochlear implant surgery at a young age, Jodie views her disability as a “superpower” and takes pride in being a role model for children.
She emphasizes the importance of normalizing conversations around disabilities and cherishes the impact she has on children who may encounter similar challenges. Jodie’s ambition stems from her father, Phil, who previously appeared on Gladiators in 2008. Tragically, Phil passed away shortly before Christmas, leaving Jodie devastated.
While rehearsing for the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special, Jodie was heartbroken by her father’s sudden death. Encouraged by her mother and dance partner, Neil Jones, she resumed filming as a tribute to her father.
Inspired by her father’s zest for life, Jodie aims to embody his spirit by embracing new challenges. She is currently preparing to hike a mountain in April to honor her father’s memory.
Jodie’s positive outlook and determination may lead her to consider participating as a full-time contestant on Strictly Come Dancing in the future. Reflecting on her journey, she acknowledges the support she has received and the emotional growth she has experienced.
The return of Gladiators to BBC One and iPlayer on January 17th at 5.45 pm marks a significant moment for fans of the show.
