A waste collector has provided clear instructions on the proper disposal of empty crisp packets and chocolate wrappers. In the UK, over eight billion packets of crisps are consumed annually, a number that is projected to rise to more than 11 billion by 2030, equating to around 30 million packets per day.
The UK ranks among the top five nations globally in chocolate consumption, leading to a significant amount of chocolate wrappers being discarded. While progress has been made in recycling food packaging in the UK, recycling crisp and chocolate wrappers remains a challenge due to their multilayer composition typically made of polypropylene or polyethylene with an aluminum coating, commonly referred to as “soft plastics.”
Although many local authorities now accept hard plastics for recycling, the infrastructure for recycling soft plastics on a large scale is still lacking. The environmental charity WRAP emphasizes the need for widespread implementation of recycling collections for plastic bags and wrappings.
Recycling policies differ across councils in the UK, with some councils able to collect and recycle soft plastics. It is advisable to check with your local council to determine what materials they accept for recycling.
The renowned waste collector, known as The No1 Binman on TikTok with over 170,000 followers, advises against placing crisp and chocolate packets in regular recycling bins. Instead, these items can be recycled by taking them to supermarkets that offer designated bins for such materials. Alternatively, they can be disposed of in the general waste bin for regular collection.
In a notable incident in 2023, old crisp packets dating back to the 1960s were discovered on a beach in Norfolk, underscoring the long-lasting impact of plastic waste. The findings included vintage Golden Wonder crisp packets priced at 5d and 2d Spangles sweets wrappers.
