Anthony Joshua has returned to the boxing gym almost three weeks after being in a serious car accident in Nigeria. The former two-time heavyweight champion was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that crashed into a stationary truck near Lagos, resulting in the tragic deaths of two close friends and teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Joshua, who sustained minor injuries, attended their funerals in London on January 4.
While on holiday in Nigeria and fresh off a victory over Jake Paul, Joshua underwent hospital treatment before being released on New Year’s Eve. Speculation arose about his future in boxing, but recent Snapchat posts showed him back in the gym, engaging in training sessions described as “mental strength therapy.” Videos depicted him working out on pads, doing lower leg exercises, cycling on a stationary bike, and swimming.
Despite reports that Joshua had decided to retire following the accident, his family member claimed he had not made a final decision. The driver involved in the crash has been charged with various offenses, and it was revealed that Joshua narrowly avoided a more severe fate by switching seats in the vehicle just before the crash.
Amidst uncertainty about his fighting future, Joshua’s promoter emphasized the need for Joshua to have time to recover physically, mentally, and emotionally before making any decisions. While there are expectations of a boxing comeback, the ultimate choice rests with Joshua, and his well-being remains a priority for those close to him.
