British Couple’s Son Worries Amid Iran Embassy Closure

The son of a British couple who were detained in Iran expressed concerns for their safety following the closure of the UK embassy in Tehran amidst significant anti-regime protests. Craig and Lindsay Foreman, who were traveling the world on a motorcycle, were arrested by Iranian authorities in January 2025 on charges of espionage, which they strongly deny. Despite their denial, they remain imprisoned in Iran under challenging conditions. Their son, Joe Bennett, described the precarious situation his parents are facing in jail due to the ongoing mass protests in the country, resulting in increased arrests, violence, and executions.

Joe mentioned that the prisons in Iran were experiencing overcrowding due to the high number of arrests during the protests, leading to unsafe and frightening conditions for inmates. He revealed that his parents had informed him about the presence of vermin in the facility, overcrowding, daily fights, and overall challenging circumstances within the prison.

The temporary closure of the UK embassy in Tehran raised additional concerns for Joe regarding his parents’ ability to seek assistance for their release. He explained that if Craig and Lindsay were released, their plan was to go to the British embassy for safety, but with the closure, their options are limited. Legal representatives in Tehran submitted a bail application on behalf of the couple to facilitate their release.

Joe expressed uncertainty about his parents’ next steps in the absence of embassy support and emphasized the importance of securing their freedom. He mentioned ongoing assessments by the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office to evaluate the situation and seek potential solutions. The Mirror reached out to the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office for a response on the matter.

Joe also detailed the harsh conditions his parents were enduring at Evin Prison, including inadequate ventilation, lack of exercise opportunities, health issues such as skin conditions and dental pain, and the gradual decline in their physical well-being due to insufficient nutrition and medical care.
