In my upbringing, I faced challenging circumstances where the odds seemed stacked against me. Living in the East End in a single-parent household, we endured basic living conditions with faulty electrical systems and occasional pest issues. Despite the hardships, we were fortunate to have a council flat, supportive teachers, and nearby family members.
Having overcome the odds, I now find myself in a position at the Cabinet table where I can assist others facing similar struggles. Currently, the statistics on childhood health are alarming, with obesity rates among four and five-year-olds reaching record highs.
A concerning trend is the primary reason children end up in hospitals being the removal of decayed teeth. The most vulnerable children are experiencing poor health due to factors such as living in damp homes, consuming low-quality food, residing in temporary housing, struggling to adapt in school, and going to bed hungry.
The future outlook for these children is worrisome if we allow these circumstances to persist. It is evident that without intervention, our youth will face shorter, less healthy, and less joyful lives.
In an effort to address these pressing issues, I am pleased to announce the expansion of the soft drinks industry levy to include sugary milkshakes, flavored milks, and milk substitutes. This initiative is aimed at promoting healthier choices for children rather than just generating revenue.
The original levy has proven effective, as sugar consumption from soft drinks has significantly reduced, resulting in fewer instances of teeth extractions among children. Despite this achievement, there is still room for improvement in public health policies.
The commitment of the Labour party towards enhancing children’s health remains steadfast. This latest measure is expected to eliminate around four million calories per day from children’s diets and reduce obesity cases by 14,000 annually.
This initiative is just one of several steps being taken to combat obesity and child poverty. Labour’s efforts include providing breakfast clubs, expanding free school meal programs, prohibiting junk food advertisements, regulating youth vaping, and improving air quality for our children’s well-being.
Every child deserves access to good health regardless of their family’s financial status. Labour is dedicated to leveling the playing field to ensure that every child receives a strong foundation for a prosperous future.
