“Contraband Concerns: Prisoners Resort to Tossing Takeout Over Fence”

Prisoners at a large correctional facility are resorting to consuming takeout meals that are being tossed over the perimeter fence, according to recent revelations. Inspectors noted that the vast 200-acre expanse of HMP Kirkham posed challenges in preventing contraband from being smuggled in this manner. Additionally, inmates at the prison are pilfering food from the kitchen due to the absence of refrigeration facilities in their living quarters.

A comprehensive report on the state of the prison near Preston, Lancashire, unveiled that the lack of freezers in the living quarters restricts prisoners to small meat purchases from the canteen, leading to thefts from the kitchen and instances of food being dropped or thrown over the fence, including meat and takeout meals.

The Independent Monitoring Board of the prison also disclosed that there were 1,000 drug seizures within a year, with 40% of inmates tested positive for drug use. The board emphasized that combating the influx and usage of drugs remains the most significant challenge facing the prison.

Despite the extensive size of the facility, no drone sightings over the prison were reported, but incidents of items being dropped or thrown over the fence were common. The report further mentioned that returning prisoners from external work or family visits were found with illicit items.

Authorities at the prison acknowledged that a limited number of inmates returning from temporary release were being searched. Concerns were raised by officers regarding the insufficient searches upon return. The explanation provided to the Independent Monitoring Board was that conducting more frequent searches was not feasible due to staffing constraints and the trust placed on prisoners during release on temporary license.

Furthermore, the report highlighted the various activities available to inmates, including the recent opening of a new gymnasium managed at a custodial level. This initiative, along with reduced reassignments of gym officers, led to increased utilization of the facilities and expanded programs such as free running, football, and touch rugby. Additionally, a wide array of activities like snooker, darts, cycling, beach cleaning, crafts, model car racing, painting, and cooking are regularly offered to the prisoners for their engagement.
