Wetherspoon has revealed its intentions to establish a new pub at a university campus. The renowned pub chain is set to operate Joe’s at the University of Birmingham in collaboration with the institution’s Guild of Students. Named after the university’s iconic clock tower, Joe’s will retain its management under the Guild of Students.
The upcoming venue, scheduled to open in Easter 2026 after undergoing extensive renovations, will offer the complete Wetherspoon food and beverage selection, including special weekly promotions like the Thursday Curry Club. This initiative follows the successful launch of Wetherspoon’s debut university pub at Hull University in 2022.
Expressing enthusiasm about the partnership, Wetherspoon’s CEO, John Hutson, stated, “We are thrilled to have teamed up with the Guild of Students and are eager to collaborate to ensure the success of Joe’s Bar.”
The President of the University of Birmingham Guild of Students, Antonia Listrat, emphasized the benefits of the partnership for students, highlighting the value-for-money offerings and the creation of additional job opportunities within the pub. She explained that any surplus generated would be reinvested in supporting student activities, enhancing the overall student experience and promoting a vibrant future for the Guild.
In addition to the university venture, Wetherspoon is set to inaugurate six new pubs by mid-January. The announcement comes on the heels of the launch of Wetherspoon’s Christmas menu, featuring the return of its popular turkey dinner option. The festive feast includes turkey breast, stuffing, roasted vegetables, pigs-in-blankets, peas, cranberry sauce, and gravy, with prices starting at £13.99 with a soft drink or £15.52 with an alcoholic beverage.
Despite reporting increased sales and profits, Wetherspoon’s founder, Tim Martin, affirmed the group’s commitment to keeping price hikes minimal. He acknowledged the industry-wide challenges posed by tax increases but assured that Wetherspoon would endeavor to minimize the impact on its pricing structure.
The Christmas menu will be available until December 31, offering customers a variety of options to enjoy the festive season at Wetherspoon pubs.
