Virgin Media is set to upgrade some broadband customers to newer, more advanced routers at no extra cost. The company will be replacing older Hub 3 and Hub 4 devices with the latest Hub 5 model, which features upgraded Wi-Fi 6 technology for faster and more reliable connections.
Eligible customers will be contacted via email over the next few weeks and months as the rollout progresses throughout 2026. Virgin Media stated that the Hub 5 is equipped with Wi-Fi 6 technology and seven internal antennas to enhance coverage within homes. The company plans to upgrade selected customers using outdated routers, benefiting thousands during the year.
If you qualify for the upgrade, Virgin Media will contact you directly, so there is no need to take any action until then. You can also verify your eligibility by logging into your My Virgin Media account online.
To determine your current router model, you can check the sticker on the back or bottom of the device or use the Virgin Media Connect app to identify your router.
Upgrading to the Hub 5 router can greatly enhance your broadband experience, offering wider Wi-Fi coverage, improved stability, and support for future updates. Additionally, it is designed to accommodate faster Gig1 speeds, resulting in quicker downloads and streaming. Gig1 speeds allow users to download a full HD movie in less than 40 seconds, which is more than 10 times faster than the UK average.
Wi-Fi 6 is the latest wireless networking technology, providing faster speeds, greater efficiency, and enhanced performance in busy environments. It can handle multiple connected devices simultaneously, offering better performance across both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Wi-Fi 6 is also energy-efficient, making it ideal for modern smart homes with numerous connected devices and high data demands. While Wi-Fi 7 technology is available, Wi-Fi 6 remains suitable for the average user.
