Nigel Farage has accused Donald Trump of violating international law through the recent military actions in Venezuela, while also suggesting that it could have positive outcomes.
The US president claimed that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were apprehended and flown out of the country following significant pressure from Washington. Explosions shook parts of Caracas as troops descended on the capital, resulting in visible black smoke emanating from various buildings early in the morning.
As the leader of Reform UK and a self-proclaimed close associate of President Trump, Farage acknowledged the illegality of the strikes but argued that they might serve as a deterrent to potential aggression from Russia and China.
In a social media post, Farage stated, “The unconventional US intervention in Venezuela raises legal concerns, but if it gives pause to China and Russia, it could be beneficial. Hopefully, this could mark a new beginning for the Venezuelan people without Maduro.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that the UK had no involvement in the US operation in Venezuela. He expressed the intention to communicate with President Trump to ascertain the facts surrounding the overnight military action, which involved multiple explosions and low-flying aircraft over Caracas.
When asked if he had spoken with Mr. Trump, Starmer replied in the negative, emphasizing the need to gather all relevant information promptly. He underscored the UK’s non-involvement in the operation and highlighted the focus on British citizens in Venezuela, collaborating closely with the British embassy.
Approximately 500 UK nationals are currently in Venezuela, and efforts are underway to ensure their safety. The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice, advising against all travel to the South American country and recommending British nationals to stay informed, review departure options, and have a personal emergency plan in place.
