“Turn Coffee Grounds Into Odor-Busting Solution”

While many individuals typically discard their leftover coffee grounds without much consideration, these grounds could actually provide a simple solution to a common issue. Instead of solely relying on store-bought household remedies for various daily problems, experts suggest that the answer to combating unpleasant smells could be found in the often overlooked coffee waste.

If you find that your refrigerator occasionally emits less-than-pleasant odors, a practical solution may already be at your fingertips in the kitchen, as indicated by a recent viral TikTok video. Neighbourhood Coffee Roasters in Liverpool shared five innovative ways to repurpose used coffee grounds rather than disposing of them.

In the video, a woman demonstrates a simple trick of placing a small cup of old coffee grounds inside the fridge to combat lingering odors from foods like cheese, fish, or leftovers. This method involves placing the used grounds in an open container and leaving them in the refrigerator to help neutralize unwanted smells.

According to experts, there is scientific backing to this concept. Research published in Food Science and Technology reveals that used coffee grounds contain nitrogen and porous organic compounds that can absorb and trap odor molecules similar to baking soda.

This natural deodorizing effect of coffee grounds goes beyond just masking unpleasant smells. Sustainability specialists explain that the porous structure of spent coffee grounds enables them to absorb specific compounds in the air responsible for creating odors.

Furthermore, besides addressing odor issues, this trick could play a role in addressing the mounting waste problem associated with coffee grounds. In the UK alone, over 500,000 tonnes of coffee waste are generated annually, with a significant portion ending up in landfills, potentially releasing harmful methane gas.

On a global scale, millions of tonnes of used coffee grounds are discarded each year worldwide, despite their retained valuable nutrients and compounds. Neighbourhood Coffee’s video also sheds light on various other surprising uses for coffee leftovers, such as adding them to compost to enrich soil and support plant growth.

Additionally, these grounds can serve as a natural fertilizer for specific plants, enhancing soil quality with their mineral and organic compound content. Alternative suggestions include utilizing the gritty texture of coffee grounds as a gentle cleaning scrub for surfaces or incorporating them into DIY skincare scrubs for exfoliation.

So, the next time you prepare your morning brew, consider the potential benefits of repurposing the grounds instead of discarding them. That seemingly insignificant leftover could help maintain a fresh-smelling fridge while contributing to waste reduction simultaneously.
