“Old iPods See Price Surge as Retro Tech Craze Grows”

In case you have an old iPod tucked away in storage, it might be a good idea to clean it up, charge it, and consider listing it on an online auction platform. Apple enthusiasts seem to be revisiting this iconic technology, which provides uninterrupted music playback without the distractions typical of smartphones.

According to eBay, there has been a significant surge in the demand for old iPods, with searches surging by over 20% last year. Specifically, searches for the iPod Classic increased by a staggering 25% year-on-year, and the term “iPod” was searched more than 1,200 times every hour on eBay globally in 2025.

eBay has reported that certain iPod models have witnessed a notable increase in their average sales prices among global eBay users in 2025 compared to 2023:

– iPod Nano 3rd generation: Over 60% rise
– iPod 3rd generation: Over 50% increase
– iPod Nano 4th generation: Over 45% surge
– iPod Classic 6th generation: Over 40% uptick

If you happen to own any of these mentioned music players gathering dust, it could be worth exploring if there are potential buyers interested in purchasing them from you. A quick search on eBay today reveals that some iPod models are selling for more than £100.

The trend of retro tech items like turntables, cassette players, and walkman-style devices continues to gain popularity, not just limited to Apple gadgets.

HISTORY OF THE iPOD

The iconic iPod was first introduced by Apple back in October 2001, boasting the promise of “1,000 songs in your pocket.” It was designed to synchronize with Apple’s iTunes software, revolutionizing how people acquired, organized, and enjoyed music. Initial models featured a mechanical scroll wheel and hard drives, while later iterations like the Nano became more compact and lightweight.

The iPod played a crucial role in Apple’s resurgence and steered the music industry towards digital distribution. While subsequent models such as the iPod mini, shuffle, and touch broadened the product range, the rise of smartphones led to the discontinuation of the iPod in 2022, marking the end of a significant era. Nonetheless, its cultural influence persists among music enthusiasts worldwide.
