“EastEnders Star Kara Tointon Opens Up About Mastectomy Decision”

EastEnders actress Kara Tointon recently shared an update on her health following her courageous decision to undergo a double mastectomy. The 42-year-old mother of two opted for the surgery after discovering she carried the BRCA mutation genes, a result of losing her mother to ovarian cancer in 2019.

Having also had her fallopian tubes removed, Kara expressed that the decision was not easy but ultimately the right one for herself and her family. During an appearance on Good Morning Britain, she emphasized the importance of being informed about personal genetics and the choices available, even though it can be overwhelming at times.

Reflecting on her family history of cancer and the impact of the faulty BRCA gene, Kara acknowledged the significance of the choice she made given the circumstances. She revealed that her sister, Hollyoaks star Hannah Tointon, tested negative for the gene, highlighting the emotional support they provided each other throughout the process.

Recalling the most challenging part of her journey, Kara mentioned the initial call to schedule the surgery as particularly daunting. However, she encouraged others not to fear facing difficult situations, emphasizing the empowerment that comes from confronting them head-on.

In May last year, Kara underwent the mastectomy and preventive fallopian tube removal, sharing her experience with her followers on Instagram. She disclosed her genetic predisposition to breast and ovarian cancer due to the BRCA gene, a revelation that stemmed from her mother’s battle with ovarian cancer and subsequent genetic testing.
