Broadband has become a crucial element of modern daily life, facilitating activities such as streaming entertainment, remote work, home security through internet-connected cameras, and managing smart home devices like lighting and heating.
With the increasing adoption of internet-connected devices and a growing demand for online content streaming, fast and reliable broadband access is now essential. However, not all internet service providers (ISPs) are delivering the same level of performance.
According to SpeedGo, a new broadband speed-testing service, Virgin Media leads the UK in average download speeds, clocking in at an impressive 256.5Mbps. This speed translates to downloading a full HD movie in just over two minutes, more than three times faster than the national average.
Following Virgin Media, Vodafone secures the second position with average download speeds of 175Mbps, with BT (EE) coming in third. TalkTalk ranks at the bottom with an average speed of under 95Mbps.
The average UK download speeds stand as follows:
– Virgin Media: 256.5Mbps
– Vodafone: 175.1Mbps
– BT (EE): 122.5Mbps
– Sky Broadband: 113.6Mbps
– TalkTalk: 94.7Mbps
In addition to download speeds, upload speeds are crucial for users handling large file transfers or working remotely. Vodafone excels in this aspect with an average upload speed of 83.6Mbps, surpassing Virgin Media, which holds the second position with 47.2Mbps.
SpeedGo’s analysis reaffirms that in 2025, Virgin Media led the UK in providing the fastest broadband internet with an average download speed of 256.5Mbps, while Vodafone achieved the highest average upload speed at 83.6Mbps.
