On a chilly and damp winter day, there’s nothing quite like the comforting ambiance of a cozy countryside pub. The allure of this charming pub in a quaint Vale of Glamorgan village beckoned me for several reasons. Firstly, its stellar reputation for delectable cuisine. Secondly, my frequent bike rides past the establishment always tempted me to pop in for a refreshing pint.
However, the most compelling reason for my visit was the fact that this pub is under the ownership of a revered sports figure. Two decades ago, I witnessed a monumental moment in Welsh rugby history when Gavin Henson, not the first-choice kicker that day, executed a legendary kick that secured a victory for Wales against England in Cardiff. This kick marked a pivotal turning point in Welsh rugby.
Henson, renowned for his distinctive appearance and talent, rose to fame as part of a prominent celebrity duo with singer Charlotte Church, earning the moniker “Welsh Posh and Becks.” Despite his celebrity status, Henson’s true passion lay in his athletic prowess. Following his retirement from the spotlight, he now leads a low-key life in St Brides Major, near his hometown.
In 2019, Henson and his wife assumed ownership of The Fox, a pub that quickly garnered praise for its inviting atmosphere and delectable fare. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and Brexit, the pub continued to thrive, with Henson himself occasionally assisting patrons.
Stepping into the pub felt like stepping into a timeless haven of warmth and style. The interior boasted a cozy blend of flagstone floors, elegant Christmas decorations, and rustic furnishings. As we settled at a corner table, we savored Butty Bach ale and Jeremy Clarkson’s Hawkstone lager while perusing the menu.
The Sunday menu presented a concise yet tantalizing selection of starters and mains. Our choices of crispy ham hock with confit egg yolk, and cod and salmon fishcake with samphire and caper butter, delighted our palates with their crispy exteriors and flavorful interiors. The main courses of roast sirloin of Welsh beef and shoulder of Welsh lamb were equally impressive, accompanied by an array of delectable sides.
Our meal, including starters, mains, children’s meals, beverages, and a fruit juice, totaled £91, offering excellent value for the quality of the dining experience. The inviting ambiance and superb cuisine left a lasting impression, prompting not only my desire to return but also echoed by fellow diners expressing their intent to revisit. Although I missed the chance to catch a glimpse of my sporting idol, the overall experience was truly memorable.
