Aldi reclaimed its title as the most budget-friendly supermarket in the UK, according to recent research by consumer group Which?. The study compared the cost of a 70-item shopping list across various supermarkets. Last month, Aldi’s average total came to £121.22, narrowly beating out Lidl at £122.35 and Tesco at £136.20.
On the luxury end, Waitrose emerged as the most expensive option, averaging £166.79 for the same items. Choosing Aldi or Waitrose for all grocery needs could result in savings of over £45 for a family.
Which? conducts this comparison monthly, analyzing the prices of eight different supermarket chains for a selection of both own-label and branded products. Additionally, a larger list of 183 groceries was compared, excluding Aldi and Lidl due to their focus on a smaller range of branded items. Asda stood out as the cheapest option for the larger grocery list, costing an average of £455.52, while Waitrose remained the priciest at £522.91.
Reena Sewraz, Which? retail editor, highlighted that while Aldi proved to be the most economical choice, Lidl also offers substantial savings. As Christmas approaches, the analysis emphasizes the importance of shopping around for the best deals, as opting for one supermarket over another could save consumers up to 27%.
The price breakdown based on 70 items showed Aldi at £121.22, Lidl (including loyalty discounts) at £122.35, and Asda at £133.59. Meanwhile, based on 183 items, Asda led with £455.52, followed by Tesco at £497.01 and Waitrose at £522.91.
